MAGA extremists in the Arizona Legislature waged war on women’s reproductive freedom by blocking efforts to overturn the state’s 1864 abortion ban. They passed an abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest and introduced a bill that would charge women and their doctors with first-degree murder for conducting an abortion. Additionally, MAGA extremist and State Senator J.D. Mesnard co-leads the hate group responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade.

MAGA extremist Arizona legislators advanced legislation to eliminate most vote-by-mail and early voting and ban voting centers, needlessly eliminating Arizonans’ easiest and most preferred voting methods. They also passed SCR 1044 to amend the state constitution and allow Supreme Court judges to serve indefinitely and avoid voter accountability for reinstating a Civil War-era abortion ban.

MAGA extremist legislators passed HCR 2060, an anti-immigration bill, despite widespread opposition from business leaders, law enforcement, and civil rights advocates, who argue it will harm Arizona residents, exacerbate racial profiling, and strain state resources. They also passed legislation endangering transgender youth by banning gender-affirming care and policing what bathrooms they may use.

Extremism Spotlight
Senator Mark Finchem is a leading election denier with deep ties to militia groups and extremist conspiracy theories.
- Attended the January 6th insurrection, spread false claims of voter fraud, and introduced bills to eliminate early voting, decertify electors, and allow the legislature to reject election results.
- Member of the Oath Keepers militia and received donations from individuals connected to the group; supported armed occupation of federal land and called Charlottesville a “deep state psyop.”
- Falsely claimed Barack Obama was installing a “totalitarian dictatorship,” shared anti-Muslim and antisemitic conspiracy theories, and pinned posts comparing Democrats to Nazis.
- Sponsored anti-LGBTQ+, anti-labor, and culture war legislation, including bills banning gender-affirming care, Critical Race Theory, and union protections.
ATTEMPTED TO OVERTURN ELECTION RESULTS
Thirteen Arizona state legislators supported overturning results of the 2020 Presidential election.
- On December 10, 2020, an amicus brief signed by 13 Arizona state legislators was filed in the Supreme Court of the United States supporting overturning the election results.
- When that didn’t work, the Arizona Senate tried, but failed, to hold the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in contempt for refusing to comply with a subpoena for their voting machines so they could conduct an audit, even though no fraud was detected.
In 2022, legislators tried to grant themselves power to overturn election results.
- In February of 2022, 14 legislators sponsored a bill that would have given the state legislature the right to overturn a certified election, including the following provisions:
- Require that ballots for all future elections be counted by hand;
- Mandate that votes· be cast only on Election Day;
- Repeal laws allowing anyone to get an early ballot without a specific reason; and
- Restrict people to voting only in their home precinct.
In April 2024, two state legislators were among the 11 fake electors indicted with attempting to overturn the 2020 Presidential election results.
